Blog entry 5- Period 2

Howdy, folks!

How's it going? I hope you have had a good time these days. This week it was finally our time to teach English classes. Yay! At first I was worried that we wouldn't have many students but little by little the list filled up and we had several students, good thing!

It was established that two groups would teach the classes every Thursday. My group was the first to give the classes, we were the ones who broke the ice. It was nerve-wracking to be honest, but we were able to do it without much trouble. Alisson, Magaly, Eunice and I worked hard so that the students could fully understand the topic. The truth is that we thought the students would have a basic level of English but they surprised us.

We taught them the alphabet, greetings and how to give personal information. Well, the latter we did not see in depth. In the presentation we showed each of the letters and a simple way to pronounce them as well as an image with a picture of an object that begins with the corresponding letter. I got a container full of little foam letters and asked them to draw a letter and tell me its pronunciation. They did a great job, they already knew the alphabet.

Then we gave them a worksheet with questions such as what is your name, age and hobby. On the back of the page, there was a reading paragraph. We read it out to everyone and then they had to answer questions based on the reading. And the last activity consisted of going to the whiteboard and filling in the blanks in the sentences with the correct answer. We didn't calculate the time very well and the truth is that we were very nervous so we didn't have them put into practice what they had learned; we had planned to do a role play.

However, it was nice to be able to experience teaching a class with real students. I think the second group will feel the same way. They were in charge of grammar, specifically on the verb to be in the affirmative form and of course also the pronouns.

They did such a great job! They were having fun while teaching; it seemes that they were passionate about it and enjoyed it. They explained everything so well and the activities were entertaining and were done so that everyone could participate. The students had conversations between each other and so.

I hope the students learned a lot and had a good time as well. See you in the next post!
